Once home to the ancient Mayan and Aztec civilizations, Mesoamerica is the third largest of the world’s biodiversity hotspots. It extends from central Mexico to the Panama Canal and hosts wildlife from North and South America – including many endemic species. Its major ecosystems make up a complex network of semi-desert, lowland moist forest, tropical jungle and steaming cloud forests. Cloud forests, like those found in Sierra Gorda and Monteverde, have more biodiversity that any other ecosystem on the planet. They’re biological laboratories that still hold the promise of new discoveries.
From the mysterious jungles of the Yucatan (Mexico) to the towering mountains of Sierra Gorda (Mexico) and the steaming cloud forests of Monteverde (Costa Rica), each episode unravels the forces that created these distinct worlds and discovers how plant and animal species must outcompete each other to survive in some of the world’s most extreme environments.
