Peru 2008. Jean-François Martin is heading to the top of Machu Picchu with a group of 6 young Down Syndrome hikers following in his footsteps. They’ve barely just entered the ancient Inca city, when Jean-François finds himself dreaming...of their next adventure.

The Cegep professor imagines that his students in specialized education techniques might get more out of their hiking by carrying a person with reduced mobility on their backs. “What a wonderful gift it would be if we could lend our legs to those who do not have access to the most beautiful vistas in the world!” Jean-François says it’s not difficult at all to imagine the emotions that sharing such unforgettable moments would arouse.

Upon his return from Peru, his dream became more persistent, so Jean-François gets to work making plans. He soon meets a young disabled woman who had great fun discovering formerly unreachable places while clinging to the back of her boyfriend. Her story literally gives his wings!

Jean-François devotes a few years creating the conditions that will allow him make his dream a reality. More than 6 years, in fact. Finally, in June 2016 Jean-François flies to the Azores at the head of a group of 10 students in specialized education techniques from the Cégep du Vieux Montréal. Four persons with reduced mobility join them. The students on the trip will take turns lending their legs to the 4 young adults who are unable to get around their own. For the first time in their lives, they will take part in a trek along the steep paths of the Island of São Miguel, on the conquest of places that were once completely off limits to them.

These young adults set out on a journey into the unknown without a safety net. A wave of emotions sweeps over them as they begin to understand the full meaning of a “gift of self,” which takes everyone on the adventure out of their comfort zones. Because beyond the hiking part, the cared for and the caregivers live together 24 hours a day for 2 weeks in Spartan conditions not at all adapted to the specific needs of the participants with reduced mobility. Their adventure will be one of sharing, as they get to know the others, and especially as they get to know themselves.

It’s the kind of expedition where everyone returns with unforgettable memories...but especially of having pushed themselves beyond their own limits.
