At one time or another, almost every girl dreams of becoming a ballerina. In boys, on the other hand, a dream like this is much less common. Anyone in a minority situation in their choice of career – and it’s rare and relatively unknown for a young boy to be interested in ballet and to choose to devote his life to it – almost always arouses curiosity.

Les Boys du Ballet follows the lives of three young men between the ages of 11 and 20 during a year of study at the Royal Winnipeg Ballet Dance Schools.

During the 10-month academic year, the young men do an incredible amount of physical work as they persevere in one of the most prestigious ballet schools in Canada. Their transition from childhood to adulthood is a major challenge. And the high intensity of the physical activity and the strong psychological and emotional pressure in the world of dance where they now find themselves makes their journey even more demanding and impressive.

Carefully selected from among thousands of candidates from around the world who audition every year, these boys are not ordinary dancers...nor are they ordinary boys. The way they express themselves and how they apply themselves in the work they undertake demonstrates an unparalleled level of maturity. These qualities make them especially captivating to watch and provide a personal perspective rarely seen on the screen.

Les Boys du Ballet shows the reasons why the boys dance and provides viewers with an intimate look behind the scenes into the lives of some of today’s best young male dancers.
