When twelve year old Henry's parents have to go out of town for an emergency three day trip, they leave him with his Grandpa.  Henry doesn't see Grandpa and the man’s isolated farm much: perhaps it’s a chance to bond, a family-building exercise.  Still – it’s a wide generational gap: the grandfather is taciturn, intimidating; the boy aloof, withdrawn – bespeaking an awareness of the strained relations between his parents.

Without digital distractions or much in common, the two soon find some common ground in their love of baseball.  Ice is broken, a connection made.  There really is a family bond here – a deep resonance in the blood.  Naturally, just as hearts are beginning to warm, the grandfather passes away in the night, leaving Henry as alone – physically and emotionally – as he has ever been.

With inclement weather building, Henry ventures to the neighbor's to use the landline.  The neighbor proves apparently helpful until Henry foils an attempt to drug him, initiating a desperate chain of events that might best be described as “Home Alone meets Straw Dogs”.

Escaping the sinister clutches of the neighbor, Henry makes it back to Grandpa's house in a prairie blizzard and prepares for a siege.  With his parents at least 24 hours from returning; with a deranged killer at the door, and with the very elements turning against him, Henry finds within himself a family legacy – a secret in the blood – that proves as useful as it is chilling.  In the battle for survival is written a narrative of self-discovery that will shed light on Henry, his parents, his grandfather, and the gruesome connection between all those people and the killer next door.
