Pascal Marchand, an aspiring poet from Montreal, set foot on the mythical land of Burgundy in the 1980s with the idea of immersing himself in French culture. As a young foreigner somewhat lost among French families rich in tradition and ancestral titles, he finally found his place as a winemaker. Passionate about bringing out an authentic terroir in his wines, Marchand struggles to maintain his traditional and unconventional ‘biodynamic’ approach to industrial agriculture despite the vagaries of the weather. Shot during 2016, one of the most difficult years in recent memory, Grand Cru traces the impact of catastrophic events like frost, hail, and devastating diseases on Burgundy vineyards. The film is both a love letter and a warning, since winemakers today, like Pascal, must deal with the unpredictable and destructive consequences of climate change.
